When I first saw this piece I could see immediately the outline of an arm stretching and reaching upwards out of the ground as if trying to grasp hold of something or someone. Except for cleaning and polishing, the arm and forearm remains as what emerged from the bog. I sculpted the hand from the wrist up. This bog oak is definitely the hardest and densest wood I have worked with and by far the most difficult to chisel and saw implying that this is the oldest wood I have worked with. The title “Why” is derived from an anti-war poster I recall seeing decades ago of a wounded soldier face down in the ground with his arm vertically outstretched and the poster was titled “Why”
