This piece of bog pine was found near a turf bank and it was partially burnt after a gorse fire. Immediately it appeared to me like an injured bird which had lost a wing in the fire. I brought it home and nursed it back to life. The use of the polished and curved steel pickaxe head compliments the whole piece by separating the bird from the base by both material and colour but also facilitates the illusion of the injured bird’s first flight post recovery even if it is on one wing.
