The iconic Irish peat briquette was created by the Irish State via Bord Na Mona (BNM) after world War II to alleviate the vast world fuel shortages. The briquette soon became a heating fuel mainstay in most Irish homes, both rural and urban and stirs up nostalgic and warm memories of cosy nights by the sitting-room fire during the cold and dark wintery months. Ironically it was the peat in the briquette that minded and preserved the bog oak for thousands of years in the Irish bogs. Due to Global warming, peat harvesting and turf cutting has ended. The BNM peat briquette and the unearthing of bog oak will be no more - bog oak and bog peat will again lie together undisturbed for millennia.
