When I saw the original piece of bog oak with it's vertical running grain a hurl came in to my mind. This piece of bog oak was possibly a living tree when the legendary Cu Cuchulainn, warrior and hurler famously killed the fiercesome guard hound (Cu) of Chulainn with a hurl and sliotar (hurling ball).
